Moneynick Primary School, Randalstown

Year 1/2/3

Welcome to our class. During Term 2 we will be working together to explore our theme 'There's no place like home'. We will learn about where we live, how our homes are built and how they have changed over time. We will look at homes from around the world and how climate affects where people build their homes and the materials they use. We will study the homes of our local wildlife and birds. We will create hedgehog shelters and encourage garden birds to build their homes in our beautiful garden. Exploring the polar lands and rainforest we will learn about both polar and tropical habitats comparing similarities and differences between the environments. Literacy and numeracy will be developed through play and theme. We will learn how to write short reports about homes, birds and animals. As estate agents we will create window advertisements and posters. As builders we will explore the properties of materials and why they are used to build our homes. We will study pattern, 2D and 3D shapes and the passing of time. We will create Carroll and Venn diagrams to sort household items and animal characteristics. We will complete a tally chart and create pictograms to present information about features of various properties. We look forward to all the other activities that we will share with our peers in the coming weeks e.g. Ditch the Dark Day, The Daily Mile and Grandparents' Day to name but a few. We know we will enjoy our learning during term 2 and we will always remember that 'There is no place like home'.
