Friends of Ahotokurom

The Rights Respecting School programme encourages our school community to teach the rights of the child to our pupils. To help understand how we support children across the globe, we must provide the opportunity to learn about children from other countries. This lent we will focus our learning on the Friends of Ahotokurom in Ghana. The Friends of Ahotokurom was established in 1997 and its main aim was to provide support and friendship for people with Leprosy in Ahotokurom. People who have had Leprosy are perhaps among the most disadvantaged people. Not only does the disease leave them disfigured and disabled but also the stigma of Leprosy leaves them with an inability to return to their villages. During the 1970s, American Fransicans established a mission and in 1983 opened as the Padre Pio Rehabilitation Centre, more commonly known as Ahotokurom (Place of Serenity). The centre has also established a special needs unit for the most disadvantaged children.
To support the Friends of Ahotokurom, we are holding our annual Easter Egg Draw. Tickets are on sale at 20p. All proceeds will go to this special cause.

Article 24

Every child has the right to the best possible health. Governments must provide good quality health care, clean water, nutritious food and a clean environment and education on health and well-being so that children can stay healthy. Richer countries must help poorer countries achieve this.

Article 25

If a child has been placed away from home for the purpose of care or protection they have the right to a regular review of their treatment, the way they are cared for and their wider circumstances.
